Would you hit?

When news broke that Barbara Walters suffered from a bad case of jungle fever back in the '70s, I had to do some research. Most important to me, was: how did Babs look circa 1970? She coulda been a dime a la 70's-era Farrah Fawcett or at the least, Catherine Deneuve-cute.

Farrah

Catherine

But nope, she looks exactly the same, just 40 years younger.

Fear of a Black Planet Pt. 2

This nigga has officially lost his mind.

If you dont want to waste your hard drive space on Raheem's Customer Remix f/ R. Kelly, jump below...

Hello and welcome to the Chocolate Factory
Baby place your order I got everything you need
See the catch for today is meeeeee on a platter
Chef Boyar-kelz, remix, I'm the writer
Now I recommend you do the taste test baby
And if not that then you can have my buffet baby
I'll be serving you up [up], Overflowing your cup [cup]
Put that bun in yo oven until you cant get enough
Girl you'll be contagious and calling me Ronald
Serve you up drive-thru style like McDonalds
And ya-hyaaaaaaaaaaaaa, you'll be screaming ya-hyaaaaaaaaaaa
The service so good, Kelz gonna make you wanna cry-hyaaaaa

[you might not want to read the following bars considering accusations from his pending trial]

And shawty if you thirsty, I got some good-good lemonade
12Play four quarters strong, make you wanna scrape my plate

And now for a little classic insight from Aaron Macgruder

My Nigga Dubya

According to the IRS,
Starting in late April, the Treasury will begin sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households. To receive a payment, taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, $3,000 of income and file a 2007 federal tax return. IRS will take care of the rest. Eligible people will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples), and parents will receive an additional $300 for each eligible child younger than 17. Millions of retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers who usually are exempt from filing a tax return must do so this year in order to receive a stimulus payment.

According to my nigga Dubya on April 25th,
It's obvious our economy is in a slow down, [and] this money is going to help Americans off-set the high prices we're seeing at the gas pump and the grocery store and will also give our economy a boost to help us pull out of this economic slow down.

Despite being guilty of not consulting a speech writer before going to press, I can't hate on G-Dub for stylin on us in his 11th hour. In attempt to redirect our deplorable economy and the sinking value of the dollar, the US Treasury is going to wire (we dont mint in that quantity anymore) $78 billion ($600 to 130 million eligible recipints) to the streets in the form of a tax refund. Maybe my understanding of economics is bollocks but I thought that printing $78 billion that we dont have only brings the dollar closer to the peso. Now the whole "extra money in the pocket = a spike in consumerism" jawn is a fairly legit angle; but considering that $600 can't pay a note on any of the 100,000+ foreclosures in 2007, I can't call it.

To keep it funky though, I aint even mad joe. When you broke yo mama's vase and discovered that gorilla glue in the pantry 15 minutes before she got home went ape shit, you weren't worried about what would happen once she put water in that joint. For a least three days, you were able to preserve your assskin. Thanks to G-Dub, I'm popping bottles at the club this weekend and buying speakers. Here's to bolstering the US economy!

If It Wasnt For The Bronx...

this rap shit probably never would be going on" Also, we wouldnt have had the short lived careers of Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz who were responsible for this ish right here, nigga. 10 years later, the product of Peter Gunz loins might be the most uniquely vicious underground rapper this side of pre-Styrofoam Cup Weezy (as evidenced when he renegaded Wayne here), Grafh, Lupe Fiasco, Joe Budden and early Marshall Mathers. Meet Cory Gunz.

I knew that posting that pic below, somebody would name-drop. To the unitiated, consider this your introduction. A Philadelphia native, a natural-born sanger, she just broke into her 20's. Click the album cover and disfruta. You won't be disappointed, trust me. And um, Jazmine, if you happen upon this blog, I'm interested. Holler at me 8-).

Where's Lindsay Lohan?

Wale and UCB at the Darfur event at Georgetown. UCB is really gettin it in.

Much Music

What yall know bout Choclair? This useta be my JAM. Back in the day, ma dukes wouldn't buy cable but for some reason, we got Canada's version of MTV, Much Music, with the bunny ears. I couldn't complain. Much Music introduced me to Toronto hip-hop, Kardinal Offishal, and Choclair among others. Their reggae game was also vicious. My lil sis even went out and bought Choclair's CD. Almost 10 years later, it still goes hard.

And yeah, I don't know what's up with that last second.

Wait til you hear this girl's voice

When I say I've been sitting on some goods, I really mean it. This chick is the truth. I'm not giving you any other details outside of this rather flattering photo of her. She's a youngin (like 20) and she's from Philly. Make way...

What a weirdo

Jamie Lidell - Little Bit of Feel Good

Even for me, this video is weird. I'm pretty certain he does hard drugs. *shrugs* At least he makes good music.

It's been a long time coming...

Updates this weekend may be few and far between. Your boy is headed down to the Queen City to watch the lil sis walk across that stage and get her degree. Congrats lil homey!

Sparkle

It's Santi. What more is there to say? Click the album cover to download. Got a lotta new music on the way, working on Volume 3 of Real Niggas Light Candles, which of course means I'm holding onto some ish until after I drop that. Once again, thanks for the love, new and old readers (yall been raping that Jamie Lidell link).

You know the economy sucks when...

...hookers won't take US dollars. International soccer star Ronaldo got caught up with some cross-dressing prostitutes back home in Brazil recently. The story goes that they were tryna extort money from him. He offered them greenbacks and they refused to accept:

She told police Ronaldo offered the prostitutes $600 to end the incident but they would not accept dollars. The manager then converted the money into reals for Ronaldo, but before he made the payment one prostitute asked for 50,000 reals ($30,000) to keep the story from the media, according to the police document.

The whole story is here.

Degrassi Fans, this one's for yall

This dude has recently shown up on 3 of the 7 internets. His mixtape cover is cool, if you want that whole Nom de Guerre lookbook feel. He raps and sings and, to be honest, I haven't even listened to it yet, so I'm just gonna hate on him jus cuz.

So, before the internet gets caught on any sort of hoopla over this nigga, I'd like to point out something. His real name is Aubrey and he's on Degrassi, which I think is like Gilmore Girls? Now I've never seen the show, but I hear they have a strong fanbase or something like that. Either way, I feel like it's the equivalent of an actor from Dawson's Creek tryna have a rap career. And as far as that, I'm not sure how this whole Raf Simons look is gonna work for the youngbol. Either way, he's aligning himself with internet/blipster rappers (I guess Fiddy and Rick Ross wouldn't welcome him into their cliques), which is a smart move. People of that ilk are a little less reticent about accepting soft-looking niggas like this guy. Good luck, he might be working with Wale in the near future, so be on the lookout.

And to conclude, before any of you pansies start bleeding, I haven't listened to the guy's mixtape yet. So for all I know, this kid could be the truth. I've listened to a couple of his tracks, and he does seem to be decent, but since he reminds me of the rapper version of Ryan Leslie and has a mixtape cover reminiscent of Gwen McRae-era album covers, I felt the need to hate. It's all in jest. Have yourselves a chilled coffee and click the album cover to download the mixtape.

I'll Show you how to do this, son

Ryan Leslie tries to get us to respect him. Good work, ur still a bama tho. $20 says Weezy will be collaborating with Ryan Leslie in the very near future. Perhaps to make this exact song in the studio.

Sidenote: Why is DJ Green Lantern single-handedly holding down hip-hop right now?

Tone Deaf

I have yet to download the "guitar version" of this song, and listening to this, I never will. Stop.

Wet Toes

Updated the blog playlist. If you don't wanna hear it, scroll down and click the pause button, but I had to let yall hear a few joints that I've been holding onto (cuz I still don't put everything up on the blog--snobbery is my first nature). Whew, talk about a run-on sentence.

Adele - That's It, I Quit, I'm Movin' On
The Roots ft. Wale and Chrisette Michele - Rising Up (Live on Letterman)
Fam-Lay - War Music
Jamie Lidell - Multiply

Adele is still the ish, that Letterman performance was immediately mp3-worthy, afrobeat is the new snap music (word to Fela), and soul is soul no matter how much melanin you have (or don't have).

Say Word?

So umm, sometime between us being ordinary folks that act like we're extraordinary, Don't Sleep DC listed our blog (yes, the one you're reading right now) as one of DMV's finest. (DMV = DC, Maryland, and Virginia). Don't believe me? Go 'head, check em out. We're listed on the right side under "DMV's Finest" at the top of their list.

To the person or team of persons over there, thanks. We do what we can, mostly via surreptitious methods of internet perusal which could actually be accomplished by any of our readers, but I'm sure most of you have better things to do with your time than steal things from other websites. (But then again, you read our blog, so who knows.)

But enough of the feigned humility and self-deprecating humor. We 'preciate the shout out most much and will shoot one right back to yall. And to think, this all started with some untitled, frustration-filled rant.

PS. Thanks to those who have submitted posts to youhypesikenah@gmail.com for The Conscientious Observer. We're in the process of reviewing them right now so don't get your panties in a bunch.

Crank That

In the words of David Letterman, "Wow." For those of you who don't appreciate go-go, I don't know what to tell you. (For the purists, yes, I know this is go-go inspired, but still...) The Roots + Wale and Chrisette KILT IT last night on Letterman. This performance pretty much convinced me to drop and give up $50 for The Roots Picnic in June, word to Mike Jones. Who's coming with me?

Next Best Thing

If getting to Georgetown is too much, Wale will be performing "Rising Up" with The Roots and my plus-size boo, Chrisette Michele, tonight on the Letterman Show.

Mental Giant

So as my life has been in shambles post-Florida... I did manage to accomplish a few things that will hopefully get me back on track to becoming a law-abiding tax-paying American citizen.

1) I've been conditionally accepted to an MBA program (cross ur fingers)
2) I've finally done updates for david-kenneth.net
3) Secured management for The Paxtons and chris&dave
4) And last but not least... took first place in my Yahoo! Sports fantasy bball league!!!

Darfur is the new Apartheid

As Darfur is the new Apartheid-era South Africa, the entertainment scene at large (or at least Don Cheadle) has grinded to raise public awareness of the atrocities going on across the water. Stand and Participant Productions have produced a documentary called Darfur Now and are embarking on a screening tour featuring today's music blogosphere champs in select cities. Is that Larry Fishburne on the keys?

Yet another reason to emigrate to the UK. Estelle performing "American Boy" on David Letterman (and killing it).

Oh, and you got the remix to American Boy, right?

Jimmy gone M.I.A.

More blue-eyed soul from across the pond. Yall think I'm playing when I say I'm headed to London, but with Amy, Adele, Mark, Kate, Lily, this nigga, and the rest of em, why not? Were this album made by some left-of-center black dude, it'd be hailed as a classic. No hyperbole. Is it classic? No. But it's got the feel of classic Stevie Wonder Songs In The Key Of Life, Donny Hathaway Everything is Everything, gospel-tinged, blues-colored soul that makes it a cot durn solid nigger album. Which, considering the dude's from England makes it an even greater accomplishment. But then again, at the rate Britons are producing quality soul music nowadays, maybe its jus par for the course. Click the album cover to download and enjoy.

And while you're downloading, enjoy the video for the opening track.

A Blipster's Wet Dream...

sans a fully nude Ms. Keys underneath that cot-damned trenchcoat (a la Single White Female). Either way, this summer the champions of 90's hiphop that encouraged you to grow dreads, chief, and cut school to ________ (fill in the blanks with either freestyle, beatbox, dj, bomb or break... maybe that was just me) meet the leaders of new, Fader-approved music. Seeing as how I have no idea when I'll be home, you might catch me and Mr. Garr in that Philly jawn with some press passes off the strength of the blog. We can dream right?

Third Eye Blind

Over the past year and a half, You Hype! Sike Nah... has grown immeasurably. While we're in the midst of some major upgrades and transitions, a number of our regular readers have informed us of their own interests in joining the team. While I still feel selfishly possessive of this ethereal mass of megabytes, I don't doubt that you all have just as much nothingness to say as do Dave and I.

For such reasons, we are announcing a third member of the You Hype! Sike Nah... team: You.

No, this is not as dumb as Time Magazine's person of the year and yes, this is just as dumb as Time Magazine's person of the year. The third member of the team will be known exclusively as "The Conscientious Observer." We will open our blog up to those who feel inclined to contribute anything of importance to them: random musings, new music, poetry, political diatribes, etc. Those interested in contributing should send an email to youhypesikenah@gmail.com. We will pick those items we find interesting and post them quasi-anonymously as "The Conscientious Observer". It should be understood that we will serve as editors, so changes may be made to any contributing post. We will also go ahead and say that we prolly won't respond to your emails. If we like what you send, we'll post it. If we don't, we won't. This is by no means because we think we're better than you, it's more so because we're busy people and responding to emails takes time we'd rather spend actually being better than you. (see below)

So to conclude: wanna be a part of the blog? Send an email to youhypesikenah@gmail.com with a post. We've already got a couple ready to roll so look out for those in the next week or so. Until then, hush that fuss.

Big things are in the works. Stay on the lookout for some exclusive exclusives, some new announcements and some other tweaks and changes in the very near future. Don't close that third eye.

This is too much

Can we get a drop?

?uestlove has the New Wale Mixtape

Is it me, or is this the most hyped Roots album ever? Maybe it's jus cuz I live in Philly and spend too much time on the 7 internets.

Oh, this is a shot from the new Roots video for their single "Rising Up" featuring Wale and Chrisette Michele. More aqui.

Yes, I got the Playaz Circle Album

Playaz Circle ft. Phonte - Paper Chaser.

Prolly one of my top favorite songs of the year. Yes. Prolly one of my top favorite songs of the year. Had to say it twice. It definitely looks like they cut their video budget tho. No more "Duffle Bag Boy" money?

Fear of a Black Planet

Every time I look at this pic I think, "they neva shoulda gave you niggas money!"

Golden shower jokes aside, this is a really disturbing image. Perhaps bleach blonde hair on black men never made you uncomfortable in the past (a la Sisqo, B-More stand up!), but this ol' Helga lookin-ass-nigga simply makes me fear for the progress of our people and my unborn daughter that may someday walk the halls of Kenwood Academy. I guess the more exposure to the world and creative outlets we receive, the more eccentric we may become until we completely lose our ability to put the "b" in suBtle. Which brings me to this...

I know what you're thinking... "Kelz could have really benefited from one of those", but I was actually pondering, "I pray this wasn't one of those 'last page of xxl magazine' joints". It isnt. In fact black folks don't have a damn thing to do with it. According to designergasmasks.com (yes, they have a website) its art for art's sake...

"We are in a state of perpetual war – with ourselves and with the eco-system that sustains us. Perpetual war breeds perpetual fear. In the present context, this fear stems from our extreme desire for authenticity and manifests itself in our collectively insatiable culture of consumption.

Deep down, we are afraid we may never be satisfied. An expanding archive of branded myths and icons feeds this fear. Designer Gas Masks is an attempt to visualize this state of mind. Because it is only by first acknowledging and then challenging fear that we will all be able to breathe a little easier."

Further evidence that I should have no problem making my first million by 35. Good night.

Super Eagles

If any of the youhypesikenah faithful are familiar with my nigga Obi or his lil bro Chinedu... at the 1:15 mark.

Wale on Ice, Pt. 2

Its official like stripes and whistles. The Washington Post DC Sports Blog conducted this interview, shortly following the Wale Ovechkin hubbub on two of the internets...

Which brings us to Wale, the D.C.-born go-go-fueled rapper who in recent weeks dropped some puck into his latest track, "Back in the Go Go" like so:

Yeah - Still high two stepping it; Do it for the capital, Wale Ovechkin
Wale Ovechkin? What in the name of Pollin is that all about?

"It's a double meaning: capital is money and the Capital is Washington D.C.," Wale said during a brief telephone conversation this afternoon. "I mean, I mentioned Olaf Kolzig before, but the song never made it out....It was kind of like the same thing: 'Olaf Kolzig, my goal is capital.'...A lot of rappers mention sports a lot, but it's mostly basketball. Mines are a little bit more obscure. I guess my brain works a little differently, I don't know. I don't hear too many of those [hockey references]. It is what it is. It's just part of rap, just staying relevant with things that are going on."

So he's a Caps fan?

"Never even been to a Capitals game; watch 'em on TV every once in a while," Wale said. "I'd root for them when I watch because it's D.C. I root for every local team, definitely root for them. And it doesn't hurt that we have the best player in hockey, it don't hurt."

I don't know whether Stephen Malkmus has previously praised D.C. athletes, but Wale has, of course, made liberal use of D.C. sports references throughout his career, from Freddy Adu to John Gilchrist ("Home of the Terrapins, beware of the Gilchrist"), from Sean Taylor to Clinton Portis to a Redskins rap penned for Comcast SportsNet, from Gilbert Arenas to the Hoyas. ("The home of Marvin Gaye; That's all I gotta say; Yeah, Iverson was cool; but I supported Victor Page.")

"I just write," he said, when asked how he decides which local athletes to mix into his verse. "It's not like you say, 'I'm gonna mention four players [now],' you know what I mean? It's just whatever I'm thinking about at the time. You're just writing a song, and whatever comes out, you don't really plan it."

His checklist now includes players from the Caps, the Wizards, the Redskins, D.C. United, Maryland and Georgetown, but no Nats. Does this cultural moment not extend to Half Street?

"I wear a Washington Nationals hat every day," Wale offered. "I'm wearing one right now, actually."

I dunno, Lupe showed love to lupethefiasco.blogspot.com on Go Baby, maybe we'll get an obscure reference somewhere in there. In the meanwhile... how did I miss this tee!?!?

I feel like nary a single one of the 50 bammas that bumrushed me to goodbully ever waited for six wings with mambo sauce at Lenny's Carryout on MD-202 & 75th at 2am while perusing the latest selection of black-on-black Nike Boots & North Faces out of DeMarcus' trunk. Pardon the hate.

Represent, Pt. 3

Sooooooooo, the Stussy Party was undeniably fresh. Save for a few too many sausages (in skinny selvage, might I add) that shit was jammin. I will note however, that whenever a company promises to drop free limited edition tees at their store opening, dont believe the hype. Despite 25 years of excellence and a recent stab at world domination, Stussy swears the manufacturer was late... but you could cop for the inflated last chance price after 11am the following morning. Can't knock the hustle tho!

Anywho, thanks to 4 brews and 2 shots of cuervo (at a NoVA happy hour before the party), coupled with another 2 shots of cuervo and a grand marnier at Chloe, all on an empty stomach... ya boy didnt make it past 12. According to my Co-Worker Supreme Team + Marquita, the hipsters disavowed my blackout at the bar and I was shortly thereafter expelled forceably by two asian boys in matching kate moss tees and skinny wesc denims. Or at least thats how I fantasized it.

Thanks to the seven internets and brightestyoungthings.com... we got pics!!!

Pause.

I hope the seven internets are playing a cruel joke on us.

Nonetheless, between

and A Millie, I'm trusting that Styrofoam Cup Weezy will get his Mario Chalmers on with the game on the line. Enjoy.

Illegal In Blue

In honor of her June '08 King Magazine cover, and timely return to the limelight with four feature films scheduled to drop this year, I would like to hype the one and only Stacey Dash. As the first woman I ever contemplated selling my mother into indentured servitude over, and currently the baddest 42 year old woman in existence, youngin could get it. Everything. The following is a brief video tribute to Dame's cousin, save for the barely-seen, bare-all cinemax classic after which this post is named. Schweet.

Thats kinda how I feel about that damn "Touch My Body" single. But alas, Emancipation was undeniably dope so I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt on E=MC2. Tell me how it do, I haven't given it a itunes playlist yet but its coming.

Signs That The World Is Coming To An End in 2010

from dcist.com
"The Post is reporting that an off-duty Metropolitan Police officer shot a man who was attempting to rob him at a gas station in Northeast early this morning.

A police spokesperson told the paper the shooting took place at around 12:30 a.m. at 905 Brentwood Rd. NE, though it seems like the gas station in question actually has to be the Lowest Price Gas Station at 925 Brentwood Rd. NE, as no gas station appears to be listed at the 905 address. The robbery suspect is in critical condition.

UPDATE: WJLA is reporting that the suspect has died. They also say that the suspect's gun was recovered, and that police believe he also tried to rob the gas station. Images captured by the news station confirm that it was indeed the Lowest Price Gas Station at 925 Brentwood Rd. NE."

My issue is this... the jake was in uniform. What grade of "cooked cocaine" makes you rob a uniformed cop? Second question, do y'all really believe the robbery attempt at all? Movies have taught me that a police report is trustworthy as the dead perp it implicates. Thank god for NoVA!

You Can Find Me In The A!

Who knew Atlanta had a go-go scene? The clip features XO warming up with Purple Ribbon alum (a la Janelle Monae) Scar. I guess if you're in the 404 this weekend I would suggest checking this joint out.
