And oh, I almost forgot. It's all FREE!!

Bad dreams suck. Hope everybody enjoyed your Independence Day festivities. I managed to hit the beach long enough for minimal sun burnage and got back to Philly in time for a 4th of July party with this guy at what amounts to an inner-city mansion. From the roof deck I watched fireworks in Camden, Penn's Landing, Northern Liberties, and, of course, the Art Museum simultaneously. It was nice. What sucks is when I finally got to sleep, your boy had the goonies show up in his dreams. (Not really, but I had some disturbing dreams.) Needless to say, I woke up a lil shooken. To calm my nerves, I had to holler at my boy Chet.

Chet Baker was a legendary jazz trumpeter. He was also a vocalist in his own right and this album is nothing short of classic. I'd actually planned on posting this jawn a while back, but never got around to it. I guarantee you'll enjoy it or your money back. Disfruta.

Nappy Headed Hoes vs The Booby Queens

Drake - Best I Ever Had

This video is the winner for best opening ever. I can pretty much guarantee that this will be MTV Jams Jam of the Week next week. Jay's "D.O.A." is the current week's Jam. Coincidence? I don't believe in them.

Drake definitely deserves props for this one. The video is cooteriffic. I just hope somebody sent Don Imus his check for inspiring the treatment. And the cut-ins are hilarious. "When they put that D on you, take that D!" Double entendres FTW.

I'm not a Maxwell fan at all, but some of yall are. I don't care what kinda Jenny Jones makeover they gave this nigga, his music always annoyed me. That includes his latest single. I honestly don't know the name of it, but I know it has "wings" in it and the video has hoes floating in the air for no reason. (I'm sure there is some kinda reason, but since I'm not a fan, I'm hating.) Anyways, this one's for yall. Disfruta.

I was definitely pleasantly surprised by Jeremih's debut. Even though "Birthday Sex" was and is an instant classic, I was skeptical that the Morgan Park-grad could deliver an entire album of catchy sing along songs that didn't come off as corny. Pie on my face. This jawn is decent as a mug, and the songwriting is actually pretty good. Jeremih's debut is basically a bedroom party waiting to happen. Maybe it's something about the way the wind hits Lake Michigan but this dude might be able to carry Kellz's banner for the young folks (no pedo). The mood and melodies are updated takes on what made Kellz famous (minus the child porn, of course.) And I can't hate on someone who sings "The perfect equation, like mx+b=y, we are probably apart." Some of you might can hate, but me? I can't. That's slope-intercept form, nigga.

Enough of me, get to clicking. Disfruta.

All In A Good Day

You knew this day was coming. So yes, your favorite blogger's favorite blogger has been on a bit of a hiatus as of late. May and June (and most of April too) were busy as uckfay, and let's be real, blogging doesn't pay the bills, WORK does.

Which brings us to today's post. Longtime readers know that I've been hitting you with exclusives from The Paxtons for a good minute since pre-Members Only. You should also know that your boys pulled Atmos, Ubiq, and The Smoking Section along for the ride, along with other Paxton faithful (what up Khal!) who have supported Chris and Dave throughout this entire process.

Today, you finally get to listen to what all the fuss is about. The digital version is missing 2 tracks. It was intentional though. To get the two missing tracks, you have to go here. Also this free download is for a limited time only. Feel free to support good independent hip-hop by getting at that iTunes and downloading it. If you're like me, you prolly don't pay for music, but real talk, even I coughed up some money when Janelle Monae first started selling "Violet Stars, Happy Hunting" on her Myspace page purely because I wanted to help an independent artist. Support good music!

Now that you have the whole thing, I'ma put my quarter-dollar in and give you the run-down on three of my faves. Production-wise, this jawn is not to be effed with. For anyone who thought The Paxtons music was a lil too saccharine for their liking, "Theme Music" is so raw there might be traces of E. coli in your earhole after listening to it. Word to Colorado beef. "Atlas" is my hands-down favorite track off the whole album, and it took a lot for me to not leak it to yall earlier. Tagging it with "Perspicacity" is by no means an accident (yeah, these niggas got vocabularies).

Last, but definitely not least, is this friggin "Still Waiting." First, let me remind you that The Paxtons produced the ENTIRE album. Every track you hear, they made. Chris and Dave were sitting on the instrumental to "Still Waiting" for a minute. In fact, some of you might remember that I streamed the instrumental on the blog over a year ago after Dave slid it to me. I was promptly hit up with emails and comments about what that beat was and who made it, but had to keep it close for the niggas Paxton. To all of our benefit, these dudes rip this track to pieces rhapsodizing about their beloved hometown of Chicago, Illinois. As Oscar Wao explains, there's no place like home, and after a long day of WORK, that's prolly the first place we all wanna be. Scroll up and get to clicking. It's yours now. Disfruta.

Rush Hour

I been slacking in a lotta ways, but definitely on my boys The Paxtons. What's good though, is that they know better than to count on me for ish lol. With a team at WORK and cosignatures aplenty, the album is looking for homes on hard drives all over the 7 continents. WORK drops officially at The Smoking Section sometime today. I'll be giving it to yall later tonight or tomorrow (press pause productions). In the mean between time, follow Chris and Dave as they do what they do.

This is my gift to those who live under rocks, boulders, and other geological masses. Andy Samberg, et al have been killing it for a while. I first caught wind (no flatulence) of dude with his "Chronicles of Narnia" sketch on SNL a few years back, and everybody remembers "Dick In A Box," but this Jew went in with his boys and made a complete album of original, hilarious songs.

Aside from declaring the death of autotune well before Jay (and in a much more nuanced way), "I'm On A Boat" might be second on my list of summertime bangers after The Clipse's "I'm Good" (which is currently enjoying one-song playlist status right now.) Here are two more standouts off the album:

Donuts!

Nah son, this ain't a Dilla tribute. If you didn't know, the first Friday of June is National Donut Day and today, June 5, 2009, is the first Friday of June. You know what sucks though? I live in Philly, which has ZERO Krispy Kreme shops. ZERO! The nearest Krispy Kreme is in Manhattan. Man-friggin-hattan. I'm kinda pissed, but not really (it is just donuts). Still, I feel some typa way about not being able to celebrate National Donut Day with a freshly baked Krispy Kreme donut. So much so, I might hop that Chinatown bus just to get a dozen...

Two Niggas In A Escalade...

So this past Tuesday night, I'm making spaghetti and watching Curb Your Enthusiasm when it's interrupted with one of those annoying test screens by the cable company. At least I thought it was a test. In reality, it turned out to be an official All Points Bulletin notifying me and every person watching TV that a white woman and her daughter were abducted by 2 black men in a Cadillac Escalade here in Philly. The report was made by the woman, who said she was locked in the trunk.

The next day, I and my coworkers discussed the alleged kidnapping along with some of the other crazy news stories that only happen in Philly. The whole "2 niggas in a Escalade" story didn't seem too kosher from the jump. And how are you making phone calls if you're kidnapped? Wouldn't a kidnapper have enough sense to take ur phone off you if he was gonna lock you in the trunk? Not to mention that they found the woman's real car somewhere downtown, parked nice and neat.

Well, turns out this heffa snuck off and went to Disneyworld like she wouldn't get caught. White people...

Click the album cover to download

I picked this up at the beginning of the year and have been enjoying it. It's part of a double CD but to be honest I think I only picked up the second one so that's the one I'm throwing out to yall. This one is all instrumentals tho so if you want lyrics, get on your boards and get to web surfin. To prepare you, it's definitely in the demographic of white ppl who listen to NPR and hang out at coffee shops all day, which, in this case, is a good thing. You know what to do. Disfruta.

Hilarious sidebar: So right now, i'm actually blogging around the corner from the crib at a coffee shop on my laptop b/c my home computer has swine flu mixed with full blown AIDS. While uploading the album cover, a mustachioed white guy with dark plastic-frame specs (read: typical NPR/coffee shopper) looks at my screen, smiles, and says randomly, "That's a great album."

Point proven. Click it and get it.

Loves Me, Loves Me Not (Do the Math)
BY STEVEN STROGATZ

“In the spring,” wrote Tennyson, “a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.” And so in keeping with the spirit of the season, this week’s column looks at love affairs — mathematically. The analysis is offered tongue in cheek, but it does touch on a serious point: that the laws of nature are written as differential equations. It also helps explain why, in the words of another poet, “the course of true love never did run smooth.”

To illustrate the approach, suppose Romeo is in love with Juliet, but in our version of the story, Juliet is a fickle lover. The more Romeo loves her, the more she wants to run away and hide. But when he takes the hint and backs off, she begins to find him strangely attractive. He, on the other hand, tends to echo her: he warms up when she loves him and cools down when she hates him.

What happens to our star-crossed lovers? How does their love ebb and flow over time? That’s where the math comes in. By writing equations that summarize how Romeo and Juliet respond to each other’s affections and then solving those equations with calculus, we can predict the course of their affair. The resulting forecast for this couple is, tragically, a never-ending cycle of love and hate. At least they manage to achieve simultaneous love a quarter of the time.

The model can be made more realistic in various ways. For instance, Romeo might react to his own feelings as well as to Juliet’s. He might be the type of guy who is so worried about throwing himself at her that he slows himself down as his love for her grows. Or he might be the other type, one who loves feeling in love so much that he loves her all the more for it.

Add to those possibilities the two ways Romeo could react to Juliet’s affections — either increasing or decreasing his own — and you see that there are four personality types, each corresponding to a different romantic style.

My students and those in Peter Christopher’s class at Worcester Polytechnic Institute have suggested such descriptive names as Hermit and Malevolent Misanthrope for the particular kind of Romeo who damps out his own love and also recoils from Juliet’s. Whereas the sort of Romeo who gets pumped by his own ardor but turned off by Juliet’s has been called a Narcissistic Nerd, Better Latent Than Never, and a Flirting Fink. (Feel free to post your own suggested names for these two types and the other two possibilities.)

Although these examples are whimsical, the equations that arise in them are of the far-reaching kind known as differential equations. They represent the most powerful tool humanity has ever created for making sense of the material world. Sir Isaac Newton used them to solve the ancient mystery of planetary motion. In so doing, he unified the heavens and the earth, showing that the same laws of motion applied to both.

In the 300 years since Newton, mankind has come to realize that the laws of physics are always expressed in the language of differential equations. This is true for the equations governing the flow of heat, air and water; for the laws of electricity and magnetism; even for the unfamiliar and often counterintuitive atomic realm where quantum mechanics reigns.

In all cases, the business of theoretical physics boils down to finding the right differential equations and solving them. When Newton discovered this key to the secrets of the universe, he felt it was so precious that he published it only as an anagram in Latin. Loosely translated, it reads: “It is useful to solve differential equations.”

The silly idea that love affairs might progress in a similar way occurred to me when I was in love for the first time, trying to understand my girlfriend’s baffling behavior. It was a summer romance at the end of my sophomore year in college. I was a lot like the first Romeo above, and she was even more like the first Juliet. The cycling of our relationship was driving me crazy until I realized that we were both acting mechanically, following simple rules of push and pull. But by the end of the summer my equations started to break down, and I was even more mystified than ever. As it turned out, the explanation was simple. There was an important variable that I’d left out of the equations — her old boyfriend wanted her back.

In mathematics we call this a three-body problem. It’s notoriously intractable, especially in the astronomical context where it first arose. After Newton solved the differential equations for the two-body problem (thus explaining why the planets move in elliptical orbits around the sun), he turned his attention to the three-body problem for the sun, earth and moon. He couldn’t solve it, and neither could anyone else. It later turned out that the three-body problem contains the seeds of chaos, rendering its behavior unpredictable in the long run.

Newton knew nothing about chaotic dynamics, but he did tell his friend Edmund Halley that the three-body problem had “made his head ache, and kept him awake so often, that he would think of it no more.”

I’m with you there, Sir Isaac.

Mortal Kombat

A few weeks ago, your boys Chris and Dave of The Paxtons made a trip up I-95 to holler at the Ubiq homeys. After chilling with the crew and meeting random niggas at Rittenhouse, I had the opportunity to catch these niggas doing what they do best: rapping.

Back in the day, "freestyle" meant "freestyle"--unwritten unplanned improvised rapping. Nowadays, freestyle means "I wrote this on my blackberry 2 weeks ago," which isn't bad, but it makes it even better when you see a nigga really go in. Slowly but surely, The Paxtons are winning over fan after fan, but it's good to see that these niggas are true emcees and can hang amongst the best. Press play and catch Dave freestyling for 6 and a half minutes straight. (The unedited version is even longer.) You'll enjoy it, te prometo.

The Paxtons Love the '90s... You Should Too.

Fresh off the high of "Smoke's" success, The Paxtons are back with their second single off WORK, "Just Tonight". Featuring DMV heavyweights Ra the MC and AP alongside vocals from Te'Luv, "Just Tonight" samples the CLASSIC summertime banger "My Boo," but mixes it with a lil Chicago to DC flavor for good measure. I'll be real, I played this in my class a couple months ago and my kids were JAMMIN, and this ain't even the hottest jawn off the album. From Young Dro to that homegrown...

So I'm on the trolley this morning reading the free Metro newspaper somebody left behind and on the front page is this. Evidently, the cops happened upon a row home in South Philly that was housing over $10,000 worth of that good green. How you ask? Well, let me tell you.

Some idiots were tryna break into the house through a second-story window when a neighbor snitched called the police to report a burglary in process. The cops show up, catch the weed fiends and discover that the house is packing more green than the Libyan flag.

Kanye moment: DO YOU PPPL NOTICE HOW I STRING THESE POSTS TOGETHER? FREEWAY'S FROM PHILLY-> YOUNG DRO VIDEO -> DRO FOUND IN SOUTH PHILLY! "CIRCULAR REASONING!" TRUST ME I DON'T PLAN THESE THINGS THEY JUST HAPPEN! !!LOL!

ok i'm done. and for the record, i don't consider calling the police "snitching." That is, unless you were sposed to be the 4th burglar but you punked out and called the Po-Po's instead.

Blowfish Sushi

I mean really, how can you not like Young Dro? Dro was on his white boy swag way before it had a name, but his last album was hugely slept on in spite of that "Shoulder Lean" single. "Its like Im skating on ice like Christie Yamaguchi/ Sit up in the Chevy eating blowfish sushi". If you can't appreciate lines like that, you're a lame. Simply stated.

Circular Reasoning

Click the album cover to download

In my opinion, Freeway is one of the top 5 most underrated rappers. His albums are always solid. I'm sure my 3 year residency in Philadelphia (and my 4 years at Wash U with C-City--Flipside!) have something to do with this, but bar for bar, Free be spitting. (nada.)

Still, I'm not a fan at all of album sequels. Ever since Blueprint 2, everybody wants to rename their new album as the sequel to the last. I understand the marketing technique and everything, but c'mon. I'd at least respect it if you took the same theme and reworked it like Ready to Die to Life After Death, Busta's discography, or even Illmatic to Stillmatic, but Carter I, II, III, IV, V? ¿Coño, dónde está la creatividad? la originalidad? Are we that starved for ideas?

Bukkake Sensation [||]

That was easily the most disgusting post title I have ever come up with, but it's an inside joke. Anyway, I've been busy and my home computer is still fighting the good fight against the supervirus it has (it's like the digital version of swine flu or something). Plus, Spring finally decided to show up, so your boy has been out in the real world talking to real people the old fashioned way: face to face. To make up for the lack of my usual thought-provoking posts mired in my witty ruminations, I'm going all in and giving yall anything worth disk space (some might be debatable tho). Have I listened to any of these yet? Nope. I'm too busy. The most I've done lately is watch the vid for Keri Hilson's "Knock You Down" on youtube repeatedly. (As they say in the south, that jawn is FYE!) Links are stolen, click the album covers to download.

New from Oddisee. Co-sign.

I have no idea what they were thinking with this album cover, but whatever.

I'm gonna be real with you: I don't listen to these guys. Maybe it's cuz I'm out of college now, but white guys from Harvard making music? I'm hating. Ask Ryan Leslie. I know some of yall are fans tho, so I'm posting this off the strength that yall like these folks. But like I said, I've never listened to their songs, so my opinion is obviously uninformed. Enjoy. This version is kinda deluxe too.

I'm not gonna stunt like I'm deep into the reggaeton cuz I'm not. I got at least one Don Omar song in my itunes: Pobre Diabla. Off the strength of that banger, I'm posting his latest. Reggaeton fans, it's yours.

This actually over a month old and I just never posted it. Dave's not a big MF Doom fan, but I appreciate his snarky witticisms.

I don't do webrips usually, but I'm a fan of Curren$y. His verse on "Where Da Cash At" with Weezy is one of those verses that will always get me hype and I've appreciated a lotta what he's put out.

I think the title says enough. Give it a try.

Dessert or Disaster

It's dope. Watch it.

It's a who's who, what's what type of livin'

Remember when The Sartorialist started getting all this attention (deservedly) for his semi-candid street fashion pics? It was acknowledged for what it was: a blog that was fresh and innovative in the simplicity of its model. I remember checking that blog regularly a while before it blew up and kinda feeling bummed when Scott Schuman gained icon status. Not cuz he got famous (congratulations (c) Weezy), but because the pics became less accidental and more contrived. Less art and more advertising. (It's always a mix between the two but I prefer to lean toward the artistic side; fool me into thinking you don't care about selling me something.)

Photoblogs like Schuman's are ubiquitous now, so it's hard to cull the wheat from the chaff. That is, unless your Justin Saunders of JJJJound, which is easily the coolest (best word possible) photoblog on all 7.5 internets. He was a quiet sensation on the internets up until The New York Times shouted him out late last year. And so since the secret's out, there's no need keeping it.

Before you click the link, which you must do, understand that JJJJound is analogous to a photomuseum (no hyperbole). Saunders will do subtle things like change the colors gradually as you scroll down the screen or have a subtle subtext running through a series of photos. And that's just the tip [||]. It's better than TV.

Guys, let me tell you. I've been waiting to release some of this real heat for a minute. The Paxtons have hit yall over the head with a few recent internet bangers, but they've held the material from their anticipated next release, Work, very close. That's right, all those jawns you was jamming to weren't even off the album--those are throwaways. Deep ish like a deep dish.

Surprise. No fanfare for this one. For those who are into the details, Volume 5 was listed as "1 of 2" in your itunes. Consider this the second half. Still, it stands on its own, and goes a completely different direction than the fifth. RNLC6 features some of my all-time favorite songs ("Marry Ann," "Sometimes," "The Build Up," "Californication") and some of my favorite artists (Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Feist, etc.). The bulk of it was made in one fell swoop a couple weeks ago, but I'm not gonna bore you with too much of the preliminaries. Just remember, there is always a method to the madness. As always, I packed a few off-center treats for those who enjoy some quirk in their lives. Don't sleep on the live joints either.

You know the drill. Download and press play. No skipping. You'll enjoy it or I'll refund your money. Promise.

Tracklisting:
1. "Game for Fools" - Jamie Lidell
2. "Secret" - Maroon 5
3. "Californication" - Red Hot Chili Peppers
4. "Till It Happens To You" - Corinne Bailey Rae
5. "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" (Live) - Donny Hathaway
6. "Easy To Please" - Coldplay
7. "Immigrant" - Sade
8. "A Dream" - Julian Velard
9. "Long Distance Love" - Little Feat
10. "Marry Ann" - Regina Spektor
11. "Dust and Water" - Antony & the Johnsons
12. "The Build Up" - Kings of Convenience ft. Feist
13. "You've Got It Bad Girl" - Stevie Wonder
14. "Sunshine Juice" - Hyperpotamus
15. "Lonely, Lonely" - Feist
16. "Sometimes" (Live) - Bilal

The envelope has been pushed. I've dropped 3 of these in 3 month's time, but what can I say, this winter's been tough. Since things are warming up, I doubt that I'll be dropping RNLC7 anytime soon. Until then, disfruta. And if you're adventurous, play 5 & 6 together in sequence.

Jazz legend Blossom Dearie passed a couple months ago, but this classic eponymous album from the '50s is one of many that will preserve her memory for generations to come. It's the perfect album for a spring day like today, happy and light. Disfruta.
